The first "Search" function is to enable the users
to search all databases -- collections, news, etc. -- of the
Global Memory Net, instead of going to each individual
Project under Collections. The search results will be displayed
by collection before one goes to find the details of the retrieved
images.
In addition to this cross-cultural search capability, Global Memory Net
will lead the users directly to search OCLC | Google | Wikipedia | Million resources.
We shall explain how this works:
OCLC (Online Computer Library
Center), a worldwide library cooperative, provides access to its
57 million records in the full WorldCat, reflecting the holdings of
some 9,000 libraries. You can access this through OCLC's First
Search by clicking the OCLC link in the following listing if you
have proper authorization from OCLC. If not, you can benefit from
a free co-branded tool with Yahoo officially launched
in mid-November 2004. This toolbar provides
one-click access to Open WorldCat as well as Yahoo! Searchs
Web search engine. This means that by installing this toolbar,
one can access currently 2 million of the 57 million records
available in the full WorldCat. In time, the click-through will access
moreperhaps allof the WorldCat database, as Yahoo!
begins to harvest the full file now offered by
OCLC. The new toolbar also supports access to other OCLC database
services, such as FirstSearch and netLibrary, for those using
the toolbar via library networks. The Yahoo!/OCLC Toolbar
works with Windows 98/2000/XP and MS Internet Explorer 5.0
or higher. After downloading the file from
www.oclc.org/toolbar, a user will have to execute
the file to install the toolbar. When installed, users simply
enter a query in the search box and either click on the WorldCat
logo on the far left or use the drop-down menu to the right
of the search box (Search Web ?) to reach the
Libraries link.
Our site users can also go to Google directly and search its Google Scholar,
Google Image, etc. by clicking the appropriate links listed in the bottom of
this screen.
The Wikipedia link enables the users to search relevant information (mostly
textual) related to the images in the
Wikipedia site.
The Million link enables the users to search relevant textual
information related to the images in the
Universal Library of the Carnegie Mellon University
with contents from contributors of the US-China Million
Book Project and US-India Million Book Project. The
same content can be retrieved at the
Internet Archive's site.
